Untitled (Real Floors 3), 2008
“It All Depends,” Art Of This Gallery, Minneapolis, MN. Mahogany wood grain contact paper. Approx. 725 square feet. This project is similar to the “Mind the Gap” installation in that I cleaned the original floor and created a faux parquet floor. This gallery is part of a strip of buildings that have gone through many transitions in the four years that I have lived in Minneapolis throughout the push for gentrification of Nicollet Avenue. The new owner has renovated the buildings into clean, white spaces, including the AOT gallery. However, as you look closer, the floor of the gallery is actually made of cheap, uneven plywood hidden by glossy gray paint. This installation addresses the perpetual state of transition of the gallery and the neighborhood. The empty gallery and shiny, red floor also made all of the imperfections in the walls more apparent. Additionally, this project was in conversation with Natasha Pestich's installation in the store-front windows, as seen in the last images.
