Johnson Gallery. Bethel University, St. Paul, MN. Wood grain vinyl contact paper, wooden benches. Floor approx. 23.5' x 42.5' This gallery is situated in the middle of studios and offices, and serves as a passageway as much as it is a destination. So I wanted to make a work that would upset both expectations and be most profound to the people who regularly use the space. This project was also inspired by a recent research trip to northern and central Italy where I had as much of an aesthetic experience with the architeture of the museums themselves, as I did with the artwork within them. In order to create a visceral reaction to the familar space, I used three types of faux wood grain contact paper were used to make a trompe l'oeil effect on the floor. The benches are an invitation to both walk across the artwork and spend time there. Thanks to Christopher Dela Pole for making the benches and Dr Adam Johnson for writing the essay which can be downloaded here. |
