| Untitled (On the Ideology of Public Things 1), 2010 | |
“Public Things,” Galerie Analix Forever. Geneva, Switzerland. Curated by Conrad Bakker & Barbara Polla. Clear contact paper, dirt. Each square 3"x3". Installation approx. 5'x3'. I started to fill an area on the gallery window with 3” square pieces of clear contact paper (in a grid-like fashion) with samples of dirt collected from various surfaces in the gallery and around Geneva that raise questions about our personal ideologies about public/private, function/thing-ness, real/perceived, and where those ideologies overlap or intersect with cultural assumptions. These squares keep record of both the contents of the dirt and the level of dirtiness of each of these locations/objects/people, making filthy the window of the gallery and the view through it, while also adding “privacy” to the interior of the gallery space. For the entirety of the exhibition, 3” squares of contact paper were available for gallery visitors to take a sample of dirt wherever they like and bring the square back to stick on the window to continue filling the space. |
